6 Ways To Take Screenshots in Windows 8.1 & 10, Using Built-in Tools

6 Ways To Take Screenshots in Windows 8.1 & 10, Using Built-in Tools

Some of our readers asked us to talk about all the Windows tools you can use to take quick screenshots of your screen. We've done a bit of testing and experimentation and we've found six different ways for taking all kinds of screenshots, without using third-party programs. Here's how to take screenshots in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10:

1. Use The Keyboard Shortcut - PrtScn (Print Screen)

The first method is also the best known. It works in all versions of Windows, including Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
On your keyboard, press the PrtScn (Print Screen) key. This creates a screenshot of the whole screen and saves it to the clipboard. The screenshot is not stored as a file on your hard drive.

Then, open an image editing program like Paint and paste the image from the clipboard. Then, you can save it as a file and even do some basic editing.

2. Use The Keyboard Shortcut - Windows + PrtScn

If you want to take a screenshot of the whole screen and save it as a file on the hard drive, without using any other tools, then press Windows + PrtScn on your keyboard. Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 will store the screenshot in thePictures library, under Screenshots.

You can also will find your screenshots if you use the Pictures app, by going to Pictures -> Screenshots.

3. Use The Keyboard Shortcut - Alt + PrtScn

In Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, you can also take screenshots of the active window. Open the window you want to capture and press Alt + PrtScn on your keyboard.
The screenshot is saved to the clipboard.

Open Paint or any other photo editing software and paste the image so that you can edit and save it to your Windows device.

4. Use The Snipping Tool

The Snipping Tool is a great desktop app for taking screenshots. It can create all kinds of screenshots and do some light editing.

To learn how to use it, please read this tutorial: Take Screenshots with the Snipping Tool in Windows.

5. Taking Screenshots On A Surface/Windows Tablet

If you have a Windows tablet, like a Microsoft Surface or an ASUS Vivotab or a Dell Venue, then you won't have a keyboard with a PrtScn key available. Yes, you can use the Snipping Tool but that's not great on a device with touch.
The only solution is to use the hardware buttons available on your tablet. On most (if not all) Windows tablets, you can take full-screen screenshots by pressing the Windows logo and the Volume Down key at the same time.
screenshot, Print Screen, Snipping Tool, Windows 10
You will see the screen getting darker when you do this. This is good, as it signals that a screenshot was made. You will find it in your Pictures library, in the Screenshots folder.

6. Taking Screenshots With The Share Charm (Windows 8.1 Only)

Windows 8.1 has improved the Charms concept from Windows 8 and they can also be used to take and share screenshots.

If you would like to learn more about the Charms, read this guide: What are the Charms & How to Use them.
To learn how to take screenshots using the charms, read this detailed step by step guide: How to Share Screenshots from Any App.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are several ways to take screenshots in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Unless you have complex needs, you can use the built-in tools and features, without having to install third-party programs

How to Make Money with Your Blog

How to Make Money with Your Blog

You want to make money, right? Of course you do. Everyone wants – and needs -to make money. So you started a blog since you’ve heard it’s an easy way to make cash, but you’re not quite sure how to actually make money doing it. Or maybe you already have a blog and you’re exploring ways to monetize it.
No matter which group you’re in, making money with a blog – whether it’s a hobby blog or a business blog –is possible. It’s not a get rich quick ordeal, but if you do it right, you could make enough to support your family and more. Let’s dive in and see how you can make a profit with your blog.

Monetize with CPC or CPM Ads

One of the most common ways bloggers make money is through placing ads on their site. There are two popular types of ads:
  • CPC/PPC Ads: Cost per click (also called pay per click) ads are usually banners that you place in your content or sidebar. Each time a reader clicks on the ad, you are paid for that click.
  • CPM Ads: CPM Ads, or “cost per 1,000 impressions,” are ads that pay you a fixed amount of money based on how many people view your ad.
Perhaps the most popular network for placing these types of ads is Google AdSense. With this program, you do not need to be in direct contact with advertisers; you simply place the banner on your site, Google chooses ads relevant to your content, and your viewers click on the ads. There are countless similar programs available if you find that AdSense doesn’t work for you, such as Chitika, Infolinks, and Media.net.

Sell Private Ads

Working with advertising networks isn’t your only option when it comes to selling ads. If you end up with enough traffic, advertisers may come directly to you and ask you to place their ad on your site. You can also contact advertisers yourself. The biggest difference from the above mentioned option is that there is no middle man, which means you can set your own ad rates.
Selling private ads can come in the form of banners, buttons, or links. You can even make money writing sponsored posts where you write about or give a review of an advertiser’s product or service. Another option is to write an underwritten post or series, which is where you can write about any topic, but the advertiser pays for a “Brought to you by” mention in the content.
The ways you make money with this can vary. For instance, you might charge a one-time fee for a link within a post. If you are hosting banner ads, you might charge your partner monthly.
Bonus tip: To maximize your income, you can also choose to sell sponsorship space in your newsletters, podcasts, and videos.

Include Affiliate Links in Your Content

Affiliate marketing is also another great tool for monetizing your blog. Here is howaffiliate marketing works:
  1. An advertiser has a product she wants to sell. She agrees to give you a commission from each sale if the buyer is coming from your site.
  2. She gives you a unique link that tracks your affiliate code. That way, she knows when a buyer used your link to make a purchase.
  3. You include your affiliate link on your site. You can do this directly in the content or through banner ads. If a reader clicks on your unique link and buys the product you have recommended, you earn a percentage of what she purchased.
You can utilize affiliate marketing through ad networks like Amazon Associates, or you can create private partnerships with advertisers and businesses with an affiliate program.

Sell Digital Products

If you would rather not advertise other people’s products on your site, or if you are looking for another stream of income, consider selling digital products. This can include items like:
  • eBooks
  • Online courses/workshops
  • Images, video, or music people can use in their own content
  • Apps, plugins, or themes
Just remember that if you are going to choose one of these avenues that you make it relevant and useful to your readers. A lot of bloggers make the mistake of assuming they are developing a product their readers need; listen to your readers first, and then create a digital product that will meet their needs.

Use it as a Content Marketing Tool for Your Business

It is also possible to sell physical products on your blog and to make money that way. Instead of thinking of it as making money from your blog, however, think of your blog as a content marketing tool that will drive visitors to your business website.
The possibilities are practically endless when it comes to developing a business blog. You could sell hand-made products, books, manufactured products, and so much more. Or you might already have a business and decide to start a blog to convert loyal customers.
Lets say, for example, that you refurbish and resell used smartphones out of your home. You could use a blog to attract visitors to your website where you list your current phones for sale. Your blog might cover topics about DIY refurbishing. On one level, it seems counterintuitive because you want people to buy your phones, but it also helps you build a brand and gain recognition. Social media guru Jay Baer explains the concept onCopyblogger:
I was at a conference a few years ago, and this is where I first sort of started thinking about this concept, and their founder, Robert Johnson, was speaking…
He said, “Well our best customers are the people that think they can fix it themselves.”
But eventually you are going to get out of your depth either on that project on a project down the road, at which point who are you going to call? Are you going to call somebody randomly that you discovered on Google or are you going to call the guys who you just watched their logo in the corner of a 14-minute instructional video?
This concept can also be applied to services in all types of industries. For instance, if you offered electronic repair services as opposed to physical products, you could still use the same blogging concept to increase brand awareness and convert more clients.

Sell Memberships

Another option to make money is to sell memberships to exclusive corners of your website. For instance, a career blog might charge $10 per month for users to gain access to their job board. A startup business blog might sell memberships to their forums where people can get personalized advice about their business.
The key here is that your exclusive membership has to be more valuable than something your visitors can find for free somewhere else, so be sure you’re developing something of value and worth the price.

Use it to Build Your Credibility

Blogging to build credibility can lead to many money-making opportunities. For instance, let us say you start a blog in the finance industry. People start reading your content, and your blog becomes very popular. You are now a recognized figure in the finance industry.
Once you have that authority, people might approach you to co-author a book on debt management, or you could charge to speak at conferences or to run employee financial training days.
This certainly isn’t a direct form of making money blogging, but it has worked for many well-known bloggers, and it can work for you, too. If you’re looking for a direct revenue stream, popular blogs have sold for 4-7 figures (sometimes more) by selling their branding and content.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that making money blogging is not possible by putting your site up and letting it sit there. The “if you build it, they will come” mentality doesn’t work here, so be sure you’re willing to put in the time. Most bloggers don’t see a spike of income for several months (sometimes years) after starting their blog. Before you dive too deep into blogging, remember these little bits of advice:
Create Quality Content
You are not going to make any money from your blog if people don’t read it. After all, your readers are the ones who are going to make you money, whether they’re clicking on your ads or buying your products. Always put your readers first.
Don’t Spend Your Time Exclusively on Your Blog
Developing a successful blog has a lot to do with building relationships. That can include relationships with sponsors, affiliate partners, or simply other bloggers who will direct traffic to your blog. Be sure some of your time is spent on forums and other blogs (or whatever works for you) to build these relationships and your blog.
Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment
Not all of these tips and avenues of income are going to work for you. Don’t be afraid to tweak your methods to see what works best for you and your readers.
Making money blogging can take a lot of persistence, but it can pay off in the long-run if you’re starting out from scratch. Just remember that you don’t have to use all of these money-making avenues at once. Consider what other people in your industry are doing, and start from there.
Over time, you will learn what works for you and what doesn’t. If you’re looking to make money from your blog, which option will you start with?
Let me know in the comment section :).

How To Start A Blog: A Step-By-Step Guide

How To Start A Blog: A Step-By-Step Guide

How To Start A Blog
When family and friends learn that I now work online full-time, they often ask me how to start a blog and make money online. After explaining the process of starting a blog a few dozen times, I thought it would be much easier to document a step-by-step guide on how to become a blogger. Fortunately, setting up a blog is cheap and the steps are the same whether you are learning how to start a fashion blog, food blog, lifestyle blog, or business blog, among others. Here are a few things to know before you create and build a blog.
How To Start A Blog

1. Decide What To Blog About

Blogging will not bring you millions overnight. Like any other business, it requires time, patience, and commitment, so pick a topic or niche you are passionate or knowledgeable about. Trust me, your audience can tell when you love discussing the topic in your blog posts and that will build credibility and loyalty.
Furthermore, a unique experience or perspective on a subject will help you stand out from other bloggers online, and encourage social media sharing from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. These mediums can provide exposure and drive huge amounts of traffic to your site.

2. Which Blogging Platform To Use

A majority of blogs on the internet are made using the free WordPress blogging platform. A blogging platform or CMS helps manage your content, images, and design. WordPress is the best in terms of being simple, reliable, and flexible. It is so easy to use that nearly 100 million websites use WordPress and hosting companies offer “1-Click Blog Installation” features specifically for new bloggers who want to install WordPress. Without any HTML or technical knowledge, you can build your own blog and customize it with different free themes (designs), layouts, plugins, and features.
On the other hand, you may want to learn how to start a blog for free using Blogger, Tumblr, Wix or Weebly. If you intend on making any money blogging online, I can tell you that starting a free blog is the wrong decision. Let me explain why “free” is not actually free.
  • You can’t have your own domain. This site, Yahoo.com, Google.com and CNN.com have their own domains. With a self-hosted blog, you can pick any available domain name you want and register it. However, if you choose to start a blog on Blogger.com or Tumblr.com, your website’s URL will look like YourSite.Blogger.com or YourSite.Tumblr.com. Imagine if you had to go to Yahoo.Blogger.com – what would you think? Credible or easy to remember? Would you share that “blog” with your family and friends?
  • You don’t really own your blog. Because your blog is hosted on their site, you aren’t even the “owner” of it. Your blog can be removed or deleted without warning. If you decide to move to your own domain and hosting later, you won’t be able to take your traffic or readership with you, either.
  • There is no flexibility. When you make a blog using a free blogging service, you are limited to their infrastructure, design, and layout. The themes these platforms offer are limited and boring, and you can’t install any 3rd-party plugins.
  • You can’t make money, or at least not as much. Many people make money blogging, from $100 a month to $1,000,000 per month. Unfortunately for you, most of these free blogging sites won’t allow you to, and if they do, the platform will take a percentage of your earnings.
For all these reasons and more, I highly recommend you buy your own domain (i.e. MyBlog.com or MyBlog.org) and use a cheap hosting company.

Cost of Starting A Self-Hosted Blog On Your Own Domain

The biggest advantage of starting a blog or business online is that it’s incredibly cheap. Here are the costs you may incur hosting your own blog using WordPress’s free blog software.
  • Domain: $15 per year
  • Hosting: $3 – $7 per month, or about $50 per year with a one-year discount.
The best part is there is no commitment. If after a month or two, you decide blogging isn’t for you, you can cancel and get a refund. Many hosting companies even offer a 30-Day or Anytime Money-Back Guarantee. You really have nothing to lose at this point. The tutorial below will walk you through how to create a blog.

3. Choose A Domain or Blog Name

Hopefully you’ve decided to self-host a blog on your own domain. Now comes the fun part – picking your blog name and domain.
Picking A Domain
Selecting a domain or blog name can be a challenge for some bloggers because it needs to be brandable, meaningful, short and easy to remember. If you are interested in blogging about healthy food and recipes, a domain like My-Favorite-Healthy-Food-Recipes.com or MyFavoriteFoodRecipes.com is not the way to go. Try a catchy, unique domain such as EatWell.com or HealthFanatic.com. Similarly, you can brand your domain after yourself by using your name.
Where To Buy A Domain
It is usually best for you to buy a domain and hosting package together, especially since the best hosting companies will give you the domain for free when you buy hosting, saving you both time and money. Although there are lots of registrars to buy domains from, it is always better to go with a reputable company.

4. Web Hosting

In my years building blogs, I’ve learned that BlueHost is one of the best WordPress hosting companies. BlueHost excels in the following categories:
  • Reputation, Uptime, and Security
  • Customer Service and Technical Support
  • Price and Money Back Guarantee
  • Features and Free Email Accounts
BlueHost’s shared hosting plans include a free domain, unlimited everything (space, bandwidth, email accounts, etc.), automated backups, 24/7 technical support via phone and chat, and an average up-time of 99.9% so you don’t have to deal with server crashes and network outages. BlueHost is also highly recommended for 1-click WordPress installs. Their extremely user-friendly control panel means you can start your blog in 15 minutes.
Overall, BlueHost offers powerful servers, fast connections, and unlimited bandwidth/disk space, all of which are critical to your future success making money blogging online.

How To Start A Blog - BlueHost
You will be asked to choose a hosting package. I recommend the “Starter” option for new bloggers, but if you can afford it and want the added flexibility of starting multiple blogs on the same server without buying new hosting, I suggest you opt for the “Plus” option.
How To Start A Blog - Choosing A Hosting Plan
On the next page, in the “New Domain” box, choose your desired domain name. If the domain is available, you will move on to the next step of the registration process. Otherwise, you will need to choose another name. If you already own a domain name, input it in the “I Have A Domain Name” box to proceed.
How To Start A Blog - Buy A Domain Name
Once you have chosen a blog name, you will need to fill out your account information.
Afterwards, scroll down the page to select your web hosting and options. As a new blogger, we recommend picking the “36 Month” option because it maximizes your discount and since BlueHost offers a “Money-Back Guarantee”, you can cancel your hosting plan anytime you want to get a refund of your balance. Plus, your domain is free with BlueHost – a $15 savings.
However, if you aren’t completely sure about starting a blog and making money but still want to take advantage of a discounted rate, choose the “12 Month” option and give yourself a year to grow your blog.
Please keep in mind that you will be required to make payment upfront. That’s how BlueHost is able to offer my readers some of the lowest prices in the industry. Here’s the math, based on using my special discount.
  • 12 months at $4.95 per month is $59.40 per year and $59.40 upfront.
  • 24 months at $3.95 per month is $47.40 per year and $94.80 upfront.
  • 36 months at $3.49 per month is $41.88 per year and $125.64 upfront.
Additionally, we recommend you uncheck all the add-on options, but keep the “Domain Privacy Protection” to protect your blog’s ownership details (your name, mailing address, email, phone number, etc.) from being associated with your domain name and publicly shared.
How To Start A Blog - BlueHost Plan Info
Finally, you will need to input your billing and payment information. BlueHost is one of the best and most secure hosting companies, so you can feel safe inputting your credit card details.
When the transaction completes, you will receive an email to confirm the creation of your BlueHost account. Log in to your new BlueHost account to install your WordPress blog. On the main page, find the “Website” section and click on “Install WordPress” to begin the installation process.
How To Start A Blog - Building A Website
On the pop-up screen, you’ll want to click on “Install” to start a brand new installation of WordPress.
How To Start A Blog - Install WordPress
On this page, choose your domain from the drop-down list to install your WordPress there. Leave the second “Directory” box empty.
How To Start A Blog - Check Domain
The last step is to setup your basic WordPress login details.
Click “Show Advanced Options” to type in your credentials. Your “Site Name” is effectively your blog name, and can always be changed later. Your “Admin Username” should be something unique and not publicly available for security purposes. Finally, choose an easy to remember “Admin Password”, which you also change later. Obviously keep your username/password login information handy because you will need it to access the back-end of your fresh WP install.
Finally, press “Install Now” to start the WordPress installation.
How To Start A Blog - WordPress Login Information
After the installation is complete, visit your “Site URL” to check out the template WordPress theme and layout, which you will be able to edit and customize. To log in to the back-end, click on the “Login URL” and enter the username/password you created above. For convenience, bookmark “yourdomain.com/wp-login.php” or “yourdomain.com/wp-admin/” because that will be your login URL going forward.
